Artist Statement by Mary Hillier
I work intuitively letting the images come as they will. A normal workday finds me in front of a blank canvas with no clue about what will emerge. At my feet are four miniature dachshunds, who consider themselves part of the process.
Prophecy is my heritage. My life as a child in my grandmother’s home in the french-speaking community of Fenton, Louisiana, set the stage for my imaginary-life...the one I go to when I paint! A bit of whimsy and otherworldliness is my strength as well as my Achilles heel.
Louisiana native and 1989 visual arts graduate of McNeese State University in Lake Charles, Louisiana, I also studied at USL in Lafayette, Louisiana, where I currently live.
